December 2018 Activities

DECEMBER 6, THURSDAY, Meet 8:15 a.m.
Weekday Hike in Tannehill State Park
Details: Come with us on our weekday hike.  Enjoy an easy 3 or so-mile hike on trails in an especially lovely Alabama Historical State Park. And the site is very near Birmingham!
Tannehill Ironworks Historical State Park has more than 1,500 acres in three counties set aside for hiking, camping and outdoor recreation. A miniature railroad chugs through the pines. From spring through fall, the blacksmith, miller and craftsmen demonstrate their trades. Craft shops occupy restored pioneer cabins and artisans chat with visitors from their front porches. Steeped in history, Tannehill feels timeless. The cotton gin, pioneer farm and working gristmill preserve a long-gone way of life. Hiking trails retrace historic roadways. Artifacts of Alabama’s 19th century iron industry displayed in the Iron and Steel Museum put in perspective the massive stone furnaces, Tannehill’s awe-inspiring centerpiece.
The same ingredients afford today’s visitors a pleasurable escape from modern life.
If you are retired or not working on this particular Thursday, you are urged to participate in the Southeastern Outings’ group hike on the trails and get a feel for the location and scale of the land.
This walk will be Southeastern Outings’ third hike in Tannehill Historical State Park.  Come with us for a guided tour of easily walkable trails.  Please bring water and wear good walking shoes or boots. Dress appropriately for the weather.
Please meet 8:15 a.m. at the parking lot behind the McDonald’s Galleria on U.S. Highway 31 in Hoover.  We plan to depart from there at 8:30 a.m.
Optional restaurant lunch after the hike.

Day-Use Park Admission: $5 Adults (12 years and older);          $4 Seniors (Ages 62 and older); $3 Children (Ages 6-11); ages 5 and under free

DECEMBER 8, SATURDAY, Meet 8:45 a.m.
Moderately Easy Dayhike, Alum Hollow on Green Mountain, Nature Trail also on Green Mountain, and Monte Sano State Park--all in the Huntsville, AL Area
Details: Our first adventure of the day will be hiking Alum Hollow Trail. Sitting atop Green Mountain in Huntsville, Alum Hollow Trail just opened to the public in the spring of 2016 and is on property donated to the Land Trust of North Alabama. The mile long trail (one-way) is an easy stroll through light woods, ending at two waterfalls. The last hundred feet of the trail down to the waterfalls is steep but very walkable with time and careful footing.  If you wish to not walk down to the falls, there is an area where you can sit and wait for those who do go down. While waiting, you can explore a rock overhang that probably served as shelter for Native Americans. This hike is rated easy to moderate based on the last hundred feet.
After our hike at Alum Hollow, we will go to the Madison County Nature Trail on Green Mountain for a picnic lunch. We can sit amongst the trees in the picnic grounds and enjoy the view of a covered bridge across the lake.  There are restrooms there. This is really a pretty setting.
From Green Mountain we will travel to Monte Sano State Park and hike the Sinks and Stone Cuts Trails. This 3 to 4-mile hike is moderate mainly based on length. There is some elevation gain, but it is not strenuous. Trails are generally in good shape, but in some places the trails have what is known as the 3 R’s of hiking; rocks, roots and ruts. While known for their spring wildflowers, these trails will showcase the fall forest and should offer us beautiful fall colors if conditions are right. The Stone Cuts are large, natural rock formations on the mountain.  When you enter the large limestone rocks to see the Stone Cuts, you feel the temperature drop.  This is especially refreshing during the warmer months of the year.
Please wear hiking boots or sturdy shoes and clothing appropriate for the weather.
Bring water, snacks, a picnic lunch, hiking poles if you use them and
Monte Sano Park entrance fee.

Adult Fee Ages 12+  $5.00
Seniors 62+              $2.00
Children Ages 4-11   $2.00

Optional dinner at a Huntsville restaurant after the hike.

Well-behaved, properly supervised children age 8 and over welcome.

DECEMBER 15, SATURDAY, Meet 8:45 a.m.
Dayhike on the Deadening Trail at Lake Martin near Alexander City, Alabama
Details: The Deadening Trail is among the most scenic and diverse hiking trails in Alabama.  The cliffs of the Tallapoosa, the Needles Eye, and Lichen and Jasmine Bluffs are just a few of the unusual and unique rock formations that await the hiker. The trails are routed through a variety of flora and fauna.  There are high rocky ridges with mountain long leaf pine, mountain laurel, low and high bush blueberry, and lush hardwood forests that include redbud, sourwood, dogwood, native azalea, umbrella and big leaf magnolia.  Large thickets of Catawba Rhododendron are numerous.  Deer, turkey and numerous bird species, including bald eagles, can be seen along the trail.
The Deadening Trail is a moderately strenuous 3.6 mile loop trail at Lake Martin.  The trail is a more challenging footpath than other trails located along an area of the southeast shore of beautiful Lake Martin (a 40,000-acre, 700-mile-shoreline lake) in Tallapoosa County, Alabama.
In order to manage most effectively hiking on this difficult trail it is highly recommended that you wear hiking boots, not tennis shoes, and that you bring a trekking pole (hiking stick) or two.  Also be sure to bring plenty of water with you.
Optional dinner after the hike.
Please meet 8:45 a.m. at the parking lot of the Publix in the Village at Lee Branch in Greystone.  We plan to depart from there at 9:00 a.m.

DECEMBER 22, SATURDAY, Meet 9:45 a.m.
Dayhike
Where: The new Shoal Creek Park, Montevallo, Alabama
Details: Southeastern Outings has planned an easy hike to the new Shoal Creek Park in Montevallo.  On October 30, 2018, ten people participated in an SEO scouting trip there led by Shane Baugh, the Montevallo Parks and Recreation Director, and we were delighted at what we found.
This 167-acre park has some new trails (2.1 miles and 1.6 miles) already constructed and some less developed trails which we will also hike.  One trail does follow the creek a good ways.  The park is located on both sides of Shoal Creek about 2 miles upstream from Orr Park where we have begun our past hikes on the Montevallo Parks Trail.  There is already a foot bridge over the creek in the new park.  The park is located very close to American Village on AL Highway 119 in Montevallo.
You are invited to come on this hiking trip with us.
Please bring your picnic lunch and water with you and please meet at 9:45 a.m. in the parking lot behind the McDonald’s on U.S. Highway 31 at the Riverchase Galleria.
Well-behaved, carefully supervised children age 7 and older able to walk 4 miles without complaining welcome

NOVEMBER 10, SATURDAY, 8:45 a.m.
Dayhike, Flagg Mountain in Coosa County
Details: This will be a moderately strenuous loop hike of about 4-6 miles that follows in part Forest Service roads.  Flagg Mountain is the southernmost mountain over 1000 ft. high in the Appalachian Range.  Atop the mountain we will see (but not climb up) one of only two stone towers built in Alabama in the 1930s by the CCC. We will also be able to explore some of the new 4-mile Flagg Mountain Trail being built by the Alabama Hiking Trail Society (AHTS) as one leg of the Eastern Continental/Great Eastern trails running from the Everglades to Canada. We may have spectacular views all the way to Cheaha Mountain if the day is clear.  We’ll also see nearby log and stone cabins, also built by the CCC, which  are in various stages of restoration. Although intended to become a state park (as Cheaha did), the proposed Flagg Mountain Park was never completed. Flagg Mountain became part of the Weogufka State Forest, and the area is now managed by the AHTS.
We are very pleased that Jeff Hayes, President of the AHTS, will be leading this hike for us.  This is the first time we have visited this site since March, 2010.  Optional dinner after hike.
Please meet 8:45 a.m. at the Publix in The Village at Lee Branch in Greystone. We plan to depart from there at 9:00 a.m.

September 2018 Activities

SEPTEMBER 1, SATURDAY, 10:00 a.m.

Kayak and Canoe trip

Where: Tallapoosa River near Horseshoe Bend National Military Park

Details: Please note that the correct time for departure from the Publix parking lot is 10:00 a.m.   It is NOT 9:00 a.m.

This will be Southeastern Outings’ first canoe and kayak trip on this river stretch.  This is a scenic stretch of river located in a very rural area.  This stretch is fairly easy with a multitude of riffles in it and sometimes class I or class II rapids.  Along the river we’ll stop from time to time to swim and soak in the river.

One Southeastern Outings member has two kayaks.  He is willing to make his second kayak available to another Southeastern Outings kayaker who wants to participate in this outing and who does not own a kayak.  Our generous member is willing to bring his spare kayak with him on this trip.  The spare kayak is a fairly new 8 ½ foot long sit-in (not sit-on-top) kayak.  If you would like to borrow a kayak for this trip, please contact Bill Ennis, 205/405-4636 cell.  First come, first served.

Novice canoeists are welcome and may come on this trip, but each novice canoeist must be partnered with an experienced canoeist in their canoe.

Please note that for this trip you may rent canoes or one person sit-upon plastic kayaks and paddles from Off the Beaten Path Canoe and Kayak Outfitters.  Rental fees include life jackets and shuttle service.  Also the outfitter will shuttle for a fee all drivers bringing private boats on this outing.  If you wish to rent a boat from the outfitter, please call Dan Frederick BEFORE September 1 at 205/631-4680 or email seoutings@bellsouth.net to reserve your boat.

Please note that the outfitter has only 3 canoes and 24 one-person sit-upon kayaks and 1 tandem (2-person) sit-upon kayak for rent, so be sure you call to reserve early.  Once all their boats of one type or the other are reserved for September 1, there will be no more boats of that type available to rent!  Outfitter charges are $30 for solo kayaks, $50 for canoes and tandem kayaks and $10 per non boat-renting person requesting outfitter’s transportation from takeout back to put in.

You may bring your own canoe or kayak on this trip, but you must pay the outfitter to shuttle you from the take out back to the put in if you park your car at the take out before the boats are launched.

When we arrive at the put in, you will sign a waiver and pay your shuttle or boat rental fee.  Drivers of all our cars will then drive their cars to the take out point and the outfitter will bring all of them back to the put in where boat passengers and boat renters are eagerly waiting to begin paddling.  We will then paddle down the river to the take out, stopping as often as we want to.

Well-behaved, properly supervised children age 10 and over welcome.

After the kayak and canoe trip we are planning to go to a restaurant in Alexander City for dinner.  If you would like to have dinner with us at the restaurant after the canoe trip, please bring a change of clothes.  You can change clothes in the large restrooms near the put in at the Horseshoe Bend National Military Park.

Reservations Required: You must contact Dan Frederick, email seoutings@bellsouth.net or call 205/631-4680 if you plan to come on this kayak and canoe trip.  You may leave a message on Dan’s voice mail if you wish.

Potluck Picnic Lunch followed by Afternoon Kayak or Canoe Paddle or Afternoon Dayhike

Where: Lower Fishing Lake (now called Beaver Lake), Oak Mountain State Park, located at the back entrance to the park.  Please note that the meeting place pavilion for this outing is different from where Southeastern Outings has gathered in the past for this outing!

Details: Prior to the canoeing and kayaking and hiking, boaters, hikers and other Southeastern Outings people and guests will get together at the Beaver Pavilion near the Flip Side Water Sports office, (FS and formerly the Fishing Center), for a group potluck picnic.  Please bring a dish of food to share with the group.  Please bring all food items to this potluck in dishes with a cover on them (think “like Tupperware”.)  Please do not bring your food in fast food, cardboard or open containers.  There are obvious issues with bees, flies and yellow jackets, etc. when setting up food exposed outdoors to nuisance insects.

You may bring a bag of potato chips, but if you do, you should bring some more substantial food to share in addition.  Please bring also $5/person ($2 seniors and children) park admission fee, a beverage for yourself and folding lawn chairs if you have them.  Southeastern Outings will furnish plates, cups, knives, forks, spoons, napkins, and ice.  Picnic preparations will begin at 11:30 a.m. We will begin eating lunch at 12:00 noon regardless of whether you are there or not!

After lunch you can enjoy boating on the lower fishing lake.  You may bring your own boat (no charge) or you may rent a canoe from the park by paying for your rental canoe at the back gate to the park.  The park says they have 5 tandem canoes for rent.  Two of the canoes each used to have one broken seat in them.  Rental rate for canoes is $14 per hour. Cash only.  No credit cards accepted.  First come, first served.

FS has available for rent 5 solo kayaks and 8 paddleboards.  Rental rate for either is $20 per hour.  Cash or credit cards accepted by FS.

No shuttle involved in any of these boating activities.  Share an adventure!  Bring a friend.

We’ll launch our boats about 1:30 p.m. or so at the lake shore.

Or you can enjoy a moderately easy afternoon hike along the shore of the upper fishing lake (now called Lunker Lake) in the park.  Hike departs from the Beaver Pavilion about 1:30 p.m.

You are welcome to participate in the boating or hiking and skip the group picnic; you are welcome to skip the boating or hiking and come just for the picnic; or, as most people did the previous five times we have sponsored this outing, you are encouraged to enjoy the outdoor exercise activities AND the picnic.

Meet at the Beaver Pavilion which is almost straight downhill from the back gatehouse entrance to the park.
