SEPTEMBER 5, SATURDAY, Meet 8:45 a.m.
Southeastern Outings Waterfall Walk, Stream Wade and Long Swims
Where: South Caney Creek in the Bankhead National Forest
Details: Join us for hikes to two beautiful waterfalls on South Caney Creek. We’ll swim at both of the falls. These falls are very lovely. We’ll walk through the woods to one waterfall, stop and swim there and get underneath the waterfall if you wish. Then we’ll wade for about a mile IN the creek to a second, larger waterfall where we’ll swim and stand under the waterfall again if you like. Then we’ll walk from that second waterfall through the woods back to the cars.
This outing is rated moderately strenuous because the walks through the woods from the cars to the first waterfall we’ll see and from the second waterfall back to the cars are completely off trail through the woods and there are some short, steep hills to climb up and go down along the way.
If you think that you may want to come home before the group outing is completed, please don’t come on this outing. In order to prevent traffic congestion at the usual public trail head our vehicles will be parked at a remote location during the entire outing. Outing participants will probably not be able to walk unguided to their cars before the outing is completed. The walk through the woods portion is completely off trail.
For the hikes through the woods we recommend that you wear long pants. This will reduce your contact with ticks and chiggers and prevent your legs from being scratched. You may wear hiking boots or sturdy water or wading shoes for the in-woods walks.
For the creek wade portion of this trip please wear old shorts or a swim suit and sturdy footwear you don’t mind getting wet and dirty. Old sneakers work well. Bare feet, flip-flops, loose slip-ons and thin-soled “beach shoes” are not acceptable! Also bring a towel along with your picnic lunch and water.
After the outing we are planning to go to a restaurant for an optional dinner. If you would like to have dinner with us at the restaurant, please bring a towel and change of clothes for dinner.
Well-behaved, properly-supervised children age 7 and over welcome. Please meet 8:45 a.m. at the Floor Décor Store on Green Springs Highway in Homewood. We plan to depart from there at 9:00 a.m. or you may meet the group at 10:30 a.m. at Jacks in Double Springs.

Southeastern Outings Kayak and Canoe Trip on Richland Creek near Prospect, Tennessee

Details: The section we will paddle is easy with few obstructions. This is a scenic stream located in a very rural area. This will be our first trip for Southeastern Outings on this creek. We used this outfitter on our July 11 Elk River kayak and canoe trip and found the quality of their service to be outstanding!
Novice canoeists are welcome and may come on this trip, but each one must be partnered with an experienced canoeist in their boat.

931-468-2444 to reserve your rental boat. When you call to reserve your boat, please be sure to identify yourself as coming with Southeastern Outings on September 12. Please note that the outfitter has 27 canoes, 20 one-person sit-upon kayaks, 18 one-person sit-in kayaks and 5 tandem sit-upon kayaks for rent, so be sure you call to reserve early. Once all their boats of a particular type are reserved for September 12 by Southeastern Outings people or anyone else, there will be no more boats in that category available to rent from that outfitter that day!
Boat rental charges are:
Solo kayaks $30
Tandem kayaks $45
Canoes $50
If you rent a boat from this outfitter, the outfitter will take you and your rented boat to the put in and meet you at the take out, so you will never need to transport your rented boat at all. Shuttle fee, paddles, and life jacket are included in boat rental fee for those who rent boats from the outfitter.
You may bring your own canoe or kayak on this trip, but you must pay the outfitter to shuttle your privately-owned boat.
Shuttle charges are:
Owned kayak $15 per boat
Owned canoe $20 per boat
Children able to swim and age 10 and over welcome.
After the kayak/canoe trip we plan to go for dinner at an excellent restaurant in Athens, Alabama. If you would like to have dinner with us at the restaurant after the kayak and canoe trip, please bring a change of clothes and your things with which to clean up.
Please meet at 8:00 a.m. at the Hayden/Corner Park and Ride. We plan to depart from there at 8:15 a.m.

SEPTEMBER 19, SATURDAY, 12:00 noon
Southeastern Outings Picnic Lunch followed by Afternoon Kayak or Canoe Paddle
Where: Lower Fishing Lake (now called Beaver Lake), Oak Mountain State Park, located at the back entrance to the park. Please note that the meeting place pavilion for this outing is different from where Southeastern Outings has usually gathered in the past for this outing!
Details: Prior to the canoeing and kayaking, boaters, and other Southeastern Outings people and guests will get together in the vicinity of the Beaver Pavilion which in turn is in the general neighborhood of the Flip Side Water Sports office, (FS and formerly the Fishing Center), for a group picnic. Please bring your own picnic lunch and beverage. We will not have a potluck lunch at this event this year due to the Covid 19 pandemic. Please bring also $5/person ($2 seniors and children) park admission fee.
Please bring folding lawn chairs. We are required to observe social distancing during this outing, so almost all of us will be seated for lunch in our respective lawn chairs. We will not be seated in or eating in the pavilion. We will begin eating lunch at 12:00 noon regardless of whether you are there or not!
After lunch you can enjoy boating on the lower fishing lake. You may bring your own boat (no charge) or you may rent a canoe from the park by paying for your rental canoe at the back gate to the park. The park says they have 5 tandem canoes for rent. Two of the canoes each used to have one broken seat in them. Rental rate for canoes is $14 per hour. Cash only. No credit cards accepted. First come, first served.
FS has available for rent 5 solo kayaks and 8 paddleboards. Rental rate for either is $20 per hour. Cash or credit cards accepted by FS.
No shuttle involved in any of these boating activities. Share an adventure! Bring a friend.
We’ll launch our boats about 1:30 p.m. at the lake shore.
You are welcome to participate in the boating or hiking and skip the group picnic; you are welcome to skip the boating and come just for the picnic; or, as most people did the previous five times we have sponsored this outing, you are encouraged to enjoy the outdoor exercise activities AND the picnic.
Meet near the Beaver Pavilion which is almost straight downhill from the back gatehouse entrance to the park.

SEPTEMBER 26, SATURDAY, Meet 8:45 a.m.
Southeastern Outings Canoe and Kayak Trip with Dinner After
Where: Terrapin Creek near Piedmont, Alabama
Details: Please plan to come on a relaxing kayak and canoe trip on Terrapin Creek in Calhoun County near Piedmont, Alabama. The section we will paddle is relatively easy with no classified rapids. This is a scenic stretch of creek located in a very rural area. Thirty-three Southeastern Outings people participated in this popular outing in June of 2017.
Please note that for this trip you may rent one person sit-upon plastic kayaks for $30 each from Terrapin Outdoor Center. Rental fees include shuttle service, paddles and life jackets. Also the outfitter will shuttle for a $10 fee per boat all private boats used on this outing. If you wish to rent a boat from Terrapin Outdoor Center, please call the Center BEFORE September 26 at 256/447-6666 to reserve your boat. Please be sure you tell the Center you are boating with Southeastern Outings.
This outfitter no longer has canoes to rent. However, Dan Frederick’s daughter, Aree, has a few canoes which she may offer to rent to people who want to canoe on this trip and who do not have their own canoes. Again, please notify Dan Frederick, seoutings@bellsouth.net or phone 205-631-4680 BEFORE September 26 to request a canoe to rent if that is what you want. We will do our best to fulfill your request.
After the canoe and kayak trip we are planning to go to an excellent restaurant in Jacksonville, Alabama for an optional dinner. If you would like to wash up and/or have dinner with us at the restaurant after the canoe trip, please bring a change of clothes and a towel. Outfitter has four changing rooms. Two are changing rooms only with no toilets or washbowls, and two are restrooms with washbowls, toilets and running water, but no showers.

Please advise your name, telephone number, skill level, whether you are bringing or wish to rent a canoe or kayak and whether you need a paddling partner. If you want to come on the September 26 kayak and canoe trip AND you are renting a boat from the outfitter at the site of the trip, you are required to call the BOTH the outfitter to reserve your boat AND ALSO contact Dan Frederick to notify him that you are coming! Please do not just show up for this outing at the meeting place without making advance reservations! And if you decide to meet us at some place other than the meeting place specified in this announcement, please notify Dan in advance and directly of this fact.
